Every year, around tax season, one question pops up more than any other:
“Why should I bother filing my tax returns when my employer already deducts tax?”
If you’re a working professional in Lesotho, here’s the simple answer: being tax compliant is your responsibility—and your opportunity.
What is Tax Really For?
Tax isn’t just money taken from your salary. It’s how we fund national priorities—like building hospitals, upgrading schools, and supporting vulnerable communities. The Revenue Services Lesotho (RSL) collects these funds to invest in our country’s development.
Here’s the Catch:
Paying ≠ Filing Here’s the Catch: Paying ≠ Filing
Even if your employer deducts PAYE (Pay As You Earn) every month, you still need to file your annual tax return with RSL between 1 April and 30 June. Without filing, you’re technically not compliant—and that could cost you later.
4 Steps to Become (and Stay) Tax Compliant
- Register for a Tax Identification Number (TIN)
To register as a taxpayer, complete the taxpayer registration form as shown below available on RSL’s websiteVisit: RSL e-registration

- Create an eFiling Profile
Create your E-filing account on RSL’s website, get your P16 from HR and file your annual return online.

2. Apply for a Tax Clearance Certificate
Apply for a tax clearance from the RSL’s website and obtain a tax clearance certificate.

3. Request Your Tax Ledger Make sure your records match what’s in the system.
Why Filing Is Worth It
Avoid penalties for undeclared income.
Claim deductions for retirement savings, home office costs, and more.
Get refunds from overpaid tax.
Spot underpayments before they grow into major debt.
Open doors to business and career opportunities.
Shift Your Mindset: Tax Is a Wealth Tool
Rather than seeing tax as a burden, think of it as a wealth-building strategy. When you understand the system, you can use tax laws to your advantage—legally reduce your liabilities, plan better, and make smarter financial moves.
Pro Tip: The more you file, the easier it gets. With every tax season, you gain clarity, control, and confidence over your money.
So don’t wait. Get compliant. Stay empowered. Build wealth—with what you already have.
Stay trailblazing!
